Ray Smith was born on May 1, 1936 in Trealaw, Rhondda, Glamorgan (South Wales). Starting acting in the early 60s he is best known for his role as Chief Superintendent Gordon Spikings, the blustery head of S.I. 10, in the British police drama Dempsey and Makepeace. He also played Detective Insp. Firbank on the long-running British TV series Public Eye. Ray Smith died to early on December 15, 1991 at the age of 55.
